I just tested it in Firefox 3.5.7 and it works just like it did before. I'll keep testing this to see if I can reproduce your problem.

Husse, are you also experiencing this problem?

Thanks altair. Do you think this is this something that might be affected by one of my Firefox settings?

I still use Gloria :)
No time to make the change and Gloria works so well
I just guessed that there might be some difference between 3.0 and 3.5

Oh well. I don't think I'll bother anymore until I get Mint 8 KDE 64 bit and all the dust settles from that transition. Perhaps it will fix itself in the process.

/usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins directory doesn't exist anymore, so don't drive yourself nuts looking for it :D You should place the .gif and .src from post 8 in your ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/searchplugins directory. Restart Firefox and enjoy superior searching on the LinuxMint forums.

Yes and No:
In Mint9 it's alive and well:
ls -al /usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1017 2009-11-19 11:26 apple.gif
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 240 2009-11-19 11:22 apple.src
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1089 2010-04-14 15:50 debian.gif
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 233 2010-04-14 15:40 debian.src
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1096 2009-06-22 18:14 google2.gif
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 138 2009-06-22 18:05 google2.src
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2183 2010-10-31 07:24 google.xml
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1080 2009-05-14 12:36 mint-forums.gif
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 199 2009-06-22 17:50 mint-forums.src
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 747 2009-04-29 15:11 ubuntu-forums.gif
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 197 2009-05-30 15:43 ubuntu-forums.src
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1178 2010-04-30 09:12 wikipedia.xml
In LMDE you are correct, it does not exist.
You should place the .gif and .src from post 8 in your ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/searchplugins directory.
Unfortunately that directory doesn't exist in LMDE either so you need to create the "searchplugins" directory first and then add the gif / src.

If you're talking about the LMDE directory you can either do it graphically through Nautilus.

Or though the terminal:

Code: Select all

mkdir /home/your-user-name/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/searchplugins
Change "your-user-name" and "*default" to their appropriate values.

Using Gnome and either terminal or GUI which ever will get it done quickest and easiest

I have yet hopefully just one more question

mkdir /home/willie42/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/searchplugins but change the default to what My browser???? Sorry I am still a bit of a newby at some of this

Sorry about that. That was not stated correctly on my part.

On my system it's located at:
/home/altair/.mozilla/firefox/y957mufj.default/searchplugins
You need to change "altair" and "y957mufj" to your own values.

Paste into text editor

Name it mint-forums.src

Save to desktop

Open Nautilus as root

Browse to /usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins

Copy file on Desktop and paste into /usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins
Done all that. Now what do I do to have it in my search box?

I even forgot I wrote this HowTo.

I've just rewritten it to reflect the changes that both Mint and Firefox have undergone since then so what I would recommend is for you to delete the file you have in /usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins and start over again with my new HowTo.

Will see what I can dig up; I use Chrome by preference over either FF or Opera. Have all three on my box. (Mint 10)

Actually like the idea of feeding Mint money for my searches, both on-site and off.
