[HOWTO] Dual-Boot Linux Mint with Moblin

Postby kernel_script on Sun Aug 23, 2009 11:57 am

Hi,

This HOWTO is based on Gary's "How to dual boot Moblin and Ubuntu", but i tested it with Linux Mint 7 and Moblin V2 and it works perfectly, therefore i would like to share this knowledge with the community.

Please, read everything carefully before do the HOWTO.

1 - Install Moblin first, in the installation screen, choose a custom partitioning scheme.
2 - You will need to create three different partitions, one for Moblin, one for SWAP and one for Linux Mint, in that order. Create sd*1 as the root (ext3 on "/") system for Moblin. Create sd*2 as SWAP. Leave sd*3 alone. Finish the install.
3 - Install Linux Mint, in the installation screen, choose a custom partitioning scheme, the same way as you did with Moblin. Create sd*3 as ext3 (or ext4, as your wish), proceed in the installation steps, on the final step before confirm installation, hit the "Advanced" button and choose sd*3 as the install destination for the GRUB Bootloader. Finish the install.
4 - Then you will reboot into Moblin. Open a Terminal and type:

Code: Select all
sudo su
gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

And add the following to the end of the file:

Code: Select all
title Linux Mint
rootnoverify (hd0,2)
chainloader +1

Then press CTRL+S, close gedit and reboot.
P.S.: You can edit the Linux Mint title too to leave a nice and clean look on the Bootloader.

5 - Right after you turn on your Netbook, press ESC to go to the GRUB Bootloader menu, then choose the Linux Distro you wish to Boot. In my case (i mean with my Netbook) i need to press ESC repeatidly to enter the GRUB Bootloader menu.

That's all folks, enjoy. See ya.

Ah the nick is very stupid xD I created it when i was young and all excited and noobish about Linux, then i was a Linux hacker wannabe LOL I don't like it today, but i used it too much in GNU/Linux and Open Source community to leave it now. I'm stuck with it : /
