kainnvin,

I managed to torch Fusion, lost my WM, and had some strange things happened to video.

No big deal -- I didn't loose my OS -- I've done that often enough. LOL! I got it all back again e.g. Compix-Fusion with your How-To. If you can edit it all again I go back and try it again. I'm still not getting my Emerald Themes.

Again, great work in the conversion from Beryl. And, the other comments here.

To get a screen shot I use KSnapsot, from KDE, it is in the Synaptic repositories. I use ImageShack (sign-up) to post the images to, then get the code to show images on Forums, or Web Sites. It is basically cut & paste.

To do video I use gtk-recordMyDesktop -- that comes with Mint, but the output is in the .ogg/Vorbis format, which YouTube will not accept. And, everyone else that I tried. If you record a copy of all those neat Fusion things it should land in your /Home file.

There will be an Icon in your Taskbar that shows that you have turned RecordMyDesktop on, click it again to stopped recording, and you should see it record the file. The App will tell you not to do anything until the process is completed.

To convert the .ogg file to .avi use this in Terminal.

I almost forgot you need to have have mencoder installed -- that is also be found -- in Synaptic. I forget if that was part of Mint. I want that Mint DVD!

Anyway, to convert an .ogg/Vorbis file to .avi, do this in terminal

mencoder -o output_file.avi -ovc lavc -lavcopts vbitrate=5000:vhq -ffourcc DX50 -oac pcm -srate 48000 -ofps 25 your_movie.mov

your_movie.mov has the properties of something like /home/jjmacey/out3.ogg.3

I love to watch that compiling process.

Your new .avi file should land in /Home. Then post it to YouTube.

Let's flood the world with Mint! I'm working on that.

Anyway, I thought that I would share a few things, but still looking for that new Theme selection with those old Emerald Themes.

Well, I have an ATI so I didn't play with xorg.conf, it's hard as it is to get ATI drivers to work in my PC and I love the fact that Mint comes with them working out of the box.

I haven't had much time to try much, but emerald themes only work when I do compiz --replace -c emerald & after a session as started, if I try to use it at startup I loose the window borders and have to restart X to get them back.

Sorry about the torching Adler, I know the feeling and some bash commands memorized to prove it.

To use Fusion with KDE Edition it should be as simple as replacing gnome with kde in the install instructions.

If you loose the window borders try pressing alt-ctrl+backspace to restart the window manager (beware, this is the same as loggin off)

kainnvin,

I've noticed there have been daily up-dates for Fusion since I did the install. Rather than keep trying to install Emerald themes I'll live with what I have, which is enough to play with, if you know what I mean. I imagine a FusionManager, and WindowDecorator of some sort will come along soon enough!

kainnvin,

I decided that I could not wait for the repos to catch up. So, I started some Google searches.

I ran into this @ PlanetUbuntu.

http://swik.net/Ubuntu/Planet+Ubuntu/St ... n%3F/bce9s

I've responded to their Blog asking about Emerald themes.

Then went to the Ubuntu Forums, and started a new topic.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... ost2958899

From the thread there -

I have Fusion running with Emerald and no problems.

Let's see what happens. I did notice that Forum questions were coming in very fast, and furious concerning Fusion. I can only say that I am very glad that I now have an NVIDIA card in my Notebook. LOL!

Glad it turned out ok. From what I read there is a Compiz Decorator in the making, but still a ways off.

kainnvin,

One of the good things about your How To is that it uses repositories that will get updated. Other things that I followed used scripts, I don't like scripts as the long term answer to an issue.

I use alt + F2 then enter "compiz --replace -c". You posted that earlier.

That keeps everything looking good. But, no Emerald themes. No big deal right now as I know things will changes.

Just to be sure, what is the command line that I should use to add to Sessions, after I name it CompizFusion?

To be honest, I was just playing with UBUNTU 7.04 64-Bit, and was not happy with a lot of things. And, came back here. LOL!

TIA for your help.

Hello Adler. I went to you website cool site. Did you try that command with emerald on the end of it?

compiz --replace -c emerald &

Works great for me. :) I have my favorite themes.

I'm going to try your how to for recording my desktop. I have family and friends I want to show off to .... I mean I want to get them interested in Linux - preferably Mint.

newW2,

Still not having much success here.

I use alt + F2 with the code
compiz --replace -c emerald &

Fusion launches, but I loose my window border. When I launch Terminal there is just a white space. Hmm...

I have imported one Beryl Theme into Emerald. Am I using the wrong type of theme?

Adler

PS Thanks for the comments on my Site.

I guess I would try the old standby for the white screen:

sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visual

Also I had tested an xorg reconfig solutions before posting and ended up having to re-run envy, the next time around. Sounds like you have all but the themes though. I always have to re-run the visual command after playing in another sand-box. :)

newW2,

You may have misunderstood me. I'm not getting a White Screen, but when I launch "Terminal", it launches, but is all white, with no Task Bar, which makes trying to close it an interesting experience of "Hunt & Peck". LOL!

To add to that, my Task Bar is missing for all and any Windows when I lunch Fusion using alt + F2, or try adding code to Sessions to get Fusion to launch on Boot. However, all those cool effects are there!

I've been to other Forums, and it does appear to work, but not on my machine. I'll keep watching to see what improves.

Thanks for your reply.

Does anybody know or seen if Compiz usion works with nvidia legacy cards? Specifically for laptops, such a geforce4 mx Series. Been scouring google but still no confirmation.

Did you try exploder's how to on the previous page?

once you have right-clicked on the panel bar and entered the command info etc. click on the icon box (top LHS) you'll see all the icons that you can choose from. I used the green emerald gem.

Guys,

I'm back to Beryl, and the Emerald themes. Full stop, as the British say. Happily doing my thing, and showing off my Desktops, then posting to YouTube.

Actually -- I don't see any advantages to trying Fusion. Unless they have a manager out there in the near future.

Then I'll convert. As far as I can tell Beryl "out of the box" with Cassandra was the best thing that I'd ever dealt with. And, I compiled a good deal of things from source.

Consider me stupid, but there has been a great deal of changes with Compiz / Beryl in the past. Will Fusion really be the future?

I'm rocking with Beryl right now.

If anyone's curious, I had a lot of problems, until I tried everything in this post.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= ... stcount=87

Mostly problems with window borders and stuff.

So Adler, I think I was having similar problems to what you are having, if I was reading everything correctly, so give this a try. I personally like Fusion a lot better than straight Beryl.

Apparently as far as i can tell, the fusion icon is not in the same repo most of the HOW TO's deal with.
They are located in a different repo. For enabeling them follow the instructions on this page:
http://shame.tuxfamily.org/repo/?page_id=29

Apart from the official packages (Compiz & compiz fusion) there also seem to be a lot of more unstable extra unofficial plugins (i imagine the icon being one of it).

Haven't had time to test it out yet, for now I'll sit back and wait for the official packages to be updated with new stuff... :?

[edit] After more reading i think its just a spin off of the other Fusion repo (also with the GIT files), with some extra stuff added...

Hi Guys,

I've been all over a bunch of Forums trying not to loose my Windows Decorator ? Borders when I launch Fusion / Emerald.

I've tried it all in Terminal, and Alt + F2. No luck.

Are the repos up-dating? I've not seen that in the last week or so.

Finally, why isn't there a simple Fusion Windows Decorator out there by now? I mean why fight getting those Emerald Themes going?

It almost makes me want to go back to Beryl.

That's *precisely* where I am staying right now. Compiz-Fusion is too new and for my gusto still too unstable, so I'd suggest to stay away ... for now.

The combo commands don't work here either.
I just made two seperate entries in my sessions manager:

Compiz --replace
Emerald --replace

That did the trick for me (at least got fusion running together with emerald) 8)
