How To Install Firefox (Stable and Nightly)

Postby MasterPoppy on Tue Jan 26, 2010 9:30 pm

If you google it up or even search it up here you'll see there are a lot of threads asking hot to install the latest firefox or the bleeding edge alpha firefox. I figured since I didn't see an official how-to for it I'd make one because my way is painless and so simple a caveman could do it.

For the latest stable firefox paste the following into Terminal.

For 9.04 and later:

Code: Select all
echo -e "\ndeb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt  all main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list > /dev/null

Code: Select all
deb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt all main

Code: Select all
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com C1289A29

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install firefox-mozilla-build

As a side-note, for some reason usually you only need the second one (deb http ect....) then update and install but that doesn't work all the time which is when you have to do all of those.

Now for 8.10 and earlier you paste these:

Code: Select all
echo -e "\ndeb http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt  all main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list > /dev/null

Code: Select all
deb http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt all main

Code: Select all
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com C1289A29

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install firefox-mozilla-build

Bleeding Edge
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now if you want the bleeding edge I'm going to go ahead and assume you have the absolute latest software and have a clue what you're doing otherwise you really shouldn't be screwing around with software in its alpha development.

Click on menu -> Administration -> Software Sources

Enter your password if asked.

Click on the 'Other Software' tab, then click 'Add...'

Enter the following into the box that appears:

Code: Select all
ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa

Click 'Add Source'

then in the terminal, enter

Code: Select all
apt update && apt upgrade

There is a much easier way to do this in 9.10/Helena...

Click on menu -> Administration -> Software Sources

Enter your password if asked.

Click on the 'Other Software' tab, then click 'Add...'

Enter the following into the box that appears:
Code: Select all
ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa

Click 'Add Source'

then in the terminal, enter
Code: Select all
apt update && apt upgrade

This PPA supplies Firefox 3.5, 3.6 and 3.7 and Thunderbird 3.0 and 3.1
GA-965-DS3, Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz, 8GB DDR2, 2x1TB HDD, Linux Mint 11
Acer Aspire 5332, Pentium dual core 2.2GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, Linux Mint 11, Linux Mint Debian
Compaq CQ-60, Sempron 2.10GHz, 4GB DDR2, 120GB HDD, Tinycore 3.7rc2 (Minecraft server!)

alright, I'll replace the bleeding edge one with that. I still don't get why someone would want to alpha-test though. Every once in a while I'll beta something of google but mostly I'll only go as far as a Release Candidate.
