Mint 13 requires a different method:
On the boot menu press e-key and edit the boot parameters, removing ro quiet splash and adding rw single. F10 key boots you to the single mode.
In the single mode make commands
Xorg -configure
cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
reboot
How to Automake xorg.conf

Re: How to Automake xorg.conf
A basic /etc/X11/xorg.conf file for a difficult computer. If this does not work, delete it using command
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
