Optmizing Cassandra

The optimization guides have moved again, so I thought I would just start a new thread. Here are the guides for anyone that is interested,

I have had no problems using these tips and things seem to be a little quicker!

I like the newer kernel myself, most distributions are going with a 2.6.22 kernel. If you are not interested in system optimization please do not flame my thread, just ignore my post.

I have some tips for Beagle, but have not written down the steps to optimize it yet. My system uses 92.8 mb of RAM at startup. Beagle still has functionality too.

If enough people have interest I will post more tips.

Don't!
This can seriously harm your disk!

Here are some Firefox Tweaks that I use. Swiftfox and Swiftweasel use ugly fonts and I just do not see any great improvements over optimizing Firefox.

1) Go to "Edit", "Preferences".

2) Under "Downloads", place a check in " "Close it when all downloads are finished" (Why leave it up?)

3) In the "Privacy" tab change "Remember visited pages" to 0 and remove the check. (This helps keep the Cache from filling up.)

4) Change "Accept cookies from sites" to "Keep until; I close Firefox" (This helps keep cookies from building up.)

5 )Go to "Advanced", select the "Update" tab, remove the check for "Installed Adons" (You can check manually at your convenience.)

6) Clear your "Private data" when you close Firefox. ( This is just a good practice and keeps everything cleaned out and in good order.)

7) Install "Adblock Plus". (Web pages load much faster without all of the embeded ads coming up.)

Just a additional note. If you have had problems with lockups in Firefox from playing Adobe Flash video, increase your cache from the default 50 mb to 75 mb. This trick does not cure problems with flash completely but it will decrease the amount of problems you have.

Look in "Services" you will see hdparm there. Also, open Synaptic and do a search for "hdparm", it is installed by default in Cassandra.

The hdparm tip is only needed if your HDD is not using ultra dma.

I ended by asking Lord who the major users of Hdparm are today. He told me:

Just about every major distro invokes hdparm as part of system startup. Aside from that, individuals also use it to do "-W1" (write cache on), to control the drive's acoustic management settings, to control auto spin-down for laptops on battery power, etc...

Even users of SATA drives make frequent use of hdparm.

I do not see an issue here.

Hhm that sounds interesting, seems the movie has to be in browser cache..
