HowTo remove desktop icons?

Postby Frijolie on Fri Jan 12, 2007 1:27 pm

I've just completed a fresh upgrade to Bea and like the new addition(s). However the only thing that I don't like is the desktop icons. How do you remove these?

I've done some searching and can't find anything relevant. I read some suggestions to use gconf-editor? But I think that was relating to mounted drive icons so I didn't mess with it.

Also, I've uninstalled the 'display a daily fortune cookie in the terminal window' via Synaptic. However, each time I load a terminal it gives me an error message:

bash: /usr/games/fortune: No such file or directory

how do i stop the terminal from trying to load a program that has been uninstalled?

Thanks for your help.

P.S. I like the eye-candy on the documents, videos, projects, movies, downloads, and pictures folders.

Also, props to getting the network-manager installed by default in Bea, this was the first LiveCD where my wifi connection worked out-of-the-box!

If by remove icons you mean change the icon set

Go to Mint Config choose Desktop then click Themes.

Choose the theme / color scheme you like (will also change the icons) and for further tweaks click on theme details and you shall see an Icon Tab.

For new / additional themes and icon sets go here
http://www.gnome-look.org/

Good Luck!

To get rid of the Home and Computer icons you run mintDesktop and to get rid of the links to the mintDisk mounted partitions you run mintdisk (make sure to have the latest.. otherwise this option won't be there).

Ok, the problem was that the mintDesktop wasn't installed, because the appropriate repository was missing in the sources.list Now everything is OK. Thanks
