I am a new to linux idiot. I use the 64bit mint10 julia distro and found that my del 1526 inspiron wlan card was 'unrecognized'.
I struggled for a week to find a solution to free the pc from the cat5 cable. This distro did download and install the broadcom43xx driver.
Using network manager, I was unable to define eth [ eth0, eth1 , ect. ] ....nothing worked and I could not get mint to locate the laptop
wlan card. This is not a plug, or add, but these instructions worked and solved the problem.

I take no credit for the solution, but it worked. Using the above, install the alternate wicd network tool and remove network manager.
My del laptop immediately located my home wireless network.
I hope this helps others, there seems to be a bug in the network tools pertaining to the above platform. I read many a similar problem from
other mint users with other laptops while searching for a solution.
