How To Search Forum and Community Site with Chromium/Chrome

Postby Oscar799 on Fri May 27, 2011 8:28 am

I've adapted joshN's instructions from here viewtopic.php?f=42&t=55780 to work with Chromium/Chrome in Mint 11

Go to Chromium>Preferences>Basics>Manage Search Engines>Add New Search Engine

Type the following info in the boxes

Name: Linux Mint
Keyword: lm
URL:http://www.google.com/search?q=site#sclient=psy&hl=en&q=%s+site:linuxmint.com
Hit enter and you're done

To use it type "lm" and hit the tab key then type in your search terms

To do the same for Linux Mint Community Site type this info into the boxes instead:-

Name: Linux Mint Community
Keyword: lmc
URL:http://www.google.com/search?q=site#sclient=psy&hl=en&q=%s+site:community.linuxmint.com
Hit enter and you're done

To use type "lmc" and hit the tab key then type in your search terms

After many months away from using Chromium (I found versions 9 - 12 to be so unstable as to be unusable, then I just gave up trying) I have returned at version 17 and now find that it actually works, is configurable to the way I want it with only 5 extensions, and of course it is fast - it always was if you could ever get it to start  ). So one of the things I wanted to do was to add a linuxmint search shortcut which is what brought me to this topic.

I wanted to add a couple of small things to this how-to, the first is this, it is very easy to accidentally copy the leading colon before the address that Oscar799 provided, if you do this it won't work, so watch out for that one.

The second is that I prefer to search the forum site rather than the whole of linuxmint or the community site so if you want to do that as well change the address you copy and paste to this:

http://www.google.com/search?q=site#scl ... y&hl=en&q=%s+site:forums.linuxmint.com
