- open a terminal
- type "gksu gedit /etc/bash.bashrc"
- in the end of the file, remove the line /usr/games/fortune
- save the file.

Just put a # in front of the line /usr/games/fortune
has the same effect.

Yeah... me too.
But we've had a sensitive few who'd felt offended... or simply annoyed. So it's better to provide a mean to remove them before someone blows a fuse (ugly, ugly, let me tell you)...

Okay, so I am late to this party but when I saw the How To topic here I just couldn't believe my eyes  and simply had to read this thread. I love those fortunes.

Here is another example of Linux and choice! Gotta love it.

SonOfMoog, from one Christian to another, thanks for the tip about replacing fortunes with a Bible verse. :-)

Don't get me wrong here, I love a good laugh, but I did run across a fortune once that offended me, and in fact, I went back to straight Ubuntu for a while because of it, that's how much it offended me. As a married man, it offended me greatly when one day I saw a message saying "you will be divorced within a year". That deeply offended me, because it took me 35 years to find the lady who is now my wife, and by golly, I intend to keep her as long as we both shall live.

Here while back, I ran across where one can stop the fortunes from appearing, and I have heard of the "Verse" program, but I had never put two and two together like you did, with replacing the fortunes with a Bible verse. I currently use Ubuntu 9.04, but when Mint 8 comes out in about a month or so, I plan to return to that, and that's one of the first things I'll be doing with my Mint installation when that time comes. Thanx for the tip! :-)

I got kind of surprised when, after installing Mint (I used to have Ubuntu) I discovered those animals in there in the terminal, but I do personally love 'em as well, also because Mark Twain is one of my favorite writers and also Shakespeare is, so.. mix it with some fortune telling quotations and.. I just love 'em!

And they are not really Mint specials as I think they are there in a normal bash - only waiting to be activated :)

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove fortune
Does it delete fortune database with all the quotes? Or after this command quotes are still in the system?

Well crap. I did sudo apt-get remove fortune, and it messed up my themes (default ones included in Mint). Any ideas on how to fix this?
