Mint 12 VPN service failed to start - how to fix it

I recently installed Mint 12 and ran into a problem setting up my VPN. I followed a tutorial http://geekyprojects.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-vpn-connection/ but was getting an error VPN service failed to start. I resolved the problem by doing the following:
1.Open software manager and searched for network-manager-pptp. According to Software manager the application was installed so I removed it
2.Searced for pptp-linux. Acording to Software Manager the application was installed so I removed it.
3.Reset laptop
4.Once Mint was up and running again opened Software Manager.
5.Searched for network-manager-pptp and installed it.
6.Searched for pptp-linux and installed it.
7.Reset laptop
8.Error was gone.

Some other suggestion by other users/posts:
1.Remove check box for "Available to all users"
2.Update software
