MD5sum not match

Postby rsrcomputer on Sun Apr 22, 2012 2:00 pm

Hi,

I've downloaded from mostly primary mirrors about a dozen times each for 32bit Mint lisa and lxde.

Every time the md5 sum does not match what is on linuxmint download page.

Have downloaded from almost every mirror available and get md5 sums different for each and every one and all different from linuxmint download page.

The md5sum is checked by running a terminal for Downloads folder here are just a few results:

b143288766d48e1ac4075a890622ac32 linuxmint-12-gnome-dvd-32bit.iso

c515d4816a1f31f0b107f0d8e18d5cf3 linuxmint-12-gnome-dvd-32bit.iso

ad1fdf5c88fb16c5af05a2a2cc062a8d linuxmint-12-gnome-dvd-32bit.iso

5566dccc4cb668d62899af00deb5d6c9 linuxmint-12-gnome-dvd-32bit.iso

78277de88f9be1c614661e9e682e2a65 linuxmint-12-gnome-dvd-32bit.iso

Did same for a download of Ubuntu and got correct MD5sum on first download.

Appreciate any help. Thanks.

If you haven't tried it already, you might want to give a torrent download a go. My recommendation is to not waste the disk (or effort) until you get verification of the md5 checksum. Wish more people would do this very important step before burning / installing.

Good Luck,

Thanks DataMan.

Never downloaded torrents but might eventually do that.

Decided to check from another friends's computer... same result of non-matching md5 sum... so issue not due to computer or connection.

I'm running Ubuntu 10 and wanted to try Mint again... back when downloaded Mint 10 had no issues.

Somewhat disappointed no one else chimed in with suggestions especially on non-torrent downloads. :?

Will do clean install of Ubuntu 11 instead [dual boot with W7].

Wanted to install Mint on couple of computers but maybe this is good in sense that will get to install Ubuntu 11 and another distro [non Mint] I've yet to choose.

Appreciate your help.

You are certainly doing the correct thing by not installing when the md5 sums don't match.
One thing you could try is to download a different iso, perhaps LXDE and if the ms5 sums match, add GNOME through the package manager.
I'm using Linux Mint 12 kde 32 bit and the Md5 sums match.
Have you tried a different tool to check the md5 sum? I use k3b, just open the .iso file with it and it will check and display the md5 sum.

Your problem is one that should be looked into.

Thanks dvhenry.

Have been downloading Mint 12 and LXDE with same issues. Didn't know could change LXDE to Mint 12. :o

Will try your suggestion of k3b.

Are there known issues with using terminal to check md5sum?

I've been checking md5 of downloaded ISO. Is this wrong?

Should I first burn to dvd and then check md5?

Maybe issue is my not totally understanding md5sum :o

rs

If your using K3B there is no need to use command line to check MD5
K3B has a built it automatic MD5 check.
Just open K3B, select the iso. and it will load and display the MD5.

The correct MD5's (From download page)

Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" - DVD (32-bit) = ee3d6e2ca498bc7685b7f17cdb5f2eea

Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" - LXDE (32-bit) = 2b54938b8e2f14a5fbca8abc6da86f6a

Edit:

Sorry... Should read all the posts first.
dvhenry already suggested that.

http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1937 You may need to enable the correct repositories, but the LXDE and GNOME desktops are built on the same base, so it should be simple ( note: you should be able to add any DE or WM to an install without major issues).

Not that I am aware of.
I've been checking md5 of downloaded ISO. Is this wrong?

Should I first burn to dvd and then check md5?
No and no.
You should check the md5 sum of the download, then after burning, check the md5 sum on the CD/DVD, or use the boot option that checks it for you.
Maybe issue is my not totally understanding md5sum :o
If the tool you are using gives an output it shoud be the correct output.

You could try downloading from a different OS/PC or network.

A torrent remains a good option, as skipped or incomplete packets will be re downloaded to keep the download accurate for you.

Thanks everyone.

Decided wanted to really try Mint 12 so downloaded torrent.

Is there any extra precaution to take for torrents [I did check with clamav]?... always been afraid to use torrents. :?

Anyhow also downloaded k3b and both terminal and k3b show correct md5sum. 8)

Burned to dvd and had k3b check write process which was ok.

Now will install over Ubuntu.

Thanks again!!

Perhaps a couple of notes,
As always check the md5 (or sha1) sum against that on the official Linux Mint download sight.
Also as torrents are a peer to peer download it is polite and useful to seed that torrent for a while after the download, but continued seeding can be expensive in upload charges from your internet supplier, so after giving back at least as much as you have downloaded you may want to stop seeding.
