Black Screen on Startup and Shutdown

I am running Mint 12 on a Gateway P-79 series laptop. When I power on my system, or shut it down, I get nothing but a black screen until Mint is fully up, then my Desktop shows up and everything is fine. When I shut down, goes straight to black screen again until the computer shuts off. Not too terribly important since everything is working well I guess, but irritating nonetheless. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Is this your first install of Linux Mint before? If so I believe if you want to see the splash screens you can change your grub config file (I did mine because it did the same thing. Try doing a search on the forums for "editing grub" or something like that. Maybe this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 can help you. Good luck.

Note: Keep in mind that if you use a Dell it may be best to leave it disabled and not show the splash screens. Reason I say that is because a lot of Dells have graphics issues when loading.
