Mint splash screen hang solved

Postby Mad Bob on Tue Mar 04, 2008 4:24 pm

Grub has been unreliable at best for me. I initially had consistent hangs during stage 1.5 which I solved by switching boot order to HD first. However, now I'm having the mint splash screen come up and hang with some percentage of the lower portion of the monitor still black. I need to power cycle two or three times to get to the grub selection menu and from that point things work. I understood the stage 1.5 and 2, but how do I even google this?

What hardware do you use?
Not all hardware (read Mac) likes the gfxgrub we use
Find the line in/boot/grub/menu.lst that reads
gfxmenu=/etc/grub/message.mint
Comment it - use two ##
This could help but you won't see the grub splash...

I get an old school looking grub selection, but the boot selection is reliable now. Thanks for helping me fix this.

Hello,
I also have the same problem. I tried to comment it (##) as stated in the advice above, but when I try to save the file after modifying it, I get a pop-up that says that I don't have the permission to save the file. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Anything outside home needs sudo or gksudo (kdesu) for GUI applications
