Mint 12 not installing

Postby Wurnman on Wed May 02, 2012 10:42 am

Hey all, ive now tried installing Mint12 on my second work pc using the dvd and or usb. Both brings up the Linux startup and when you choose to install it stops at the kernel_thread_helper 0x6 etc. error

I have Mint 10 installed, and i dont really need to upgrade to Mint 12, i just want to really. So how come Mint 10 installed perfectly but Mint 12 refuses to go beyond a certain point.
It could not be hardware related surely.

Thx

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Really need some info to try and get you on the right track.

Mobo,
HDD type (ide, sata, ssd),
Ram (are there more than one DIMM installed, are they matching)?
Processor type (amd or intel)
I ran into the same type of problem and discovered it was in my bios settings. I had AHCI set instead of IDE. I repartitioned my drive and the install went flawlessly. You may not have to re-partition your drive but that was easiest for me.

Graphics - ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB DDR5
Memory - G-Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1333 8GB
Hdd - 180gb SSD, 2x - 2TB in Raid0

Hey thx for reply.

I doubt if the hardware info will help. We have several pc's here with same specs and i tried installing it on different one's and same result. I am installing it on a SATA drive so i don't know if setting it to IDE instead of AHCI will help, but worth a shot.

Thing is, I cant even log into linux running from the dvd, it's as if Mint 12 does not want to run on this pc(or any other model), although like I said Mint10 does. :?:

It's just that I did not know that mint 12 will be dependant on hardware that much.

Here's the specs for interest sake

Mobo: Intel 865G
CPU: Pentium 4 3.2
Ram: 3 x dimm matching 1.5gb

I know this may sound odd but give this a try. Remove all hardware except what is needed for the computer to actually run. If you have USB cards, modem, etc remove them. The only thing that should be installed is dvd drive, hard drive, mobo with processor and ram. If your mobo will run with one (1) ram dimm, install one (1), and if there are multi-hard drives, just use OS drive. Unplug all others.
Just the bare minimum. Then try your install again. Make sure you have a backup of all data you deem important.

Your last reply stated you are using a Pentium 4. Is the version of Linux Mint 12, 64 bit or 32. If your trying to install a 64 bit version of Linux Mint 12 it may be incompatible with your P4 processor. I believe they are 32 bit unless it is stated. Try the 32 bit version of Linux Mint 12 if it works, begin reinstalling your hardware one (1) component at a time rebooting after each device is installed. This will inform you of a bad or faulty part.

I'm still grasping for straws but I hope this helps. I'm hoping that it works with the 32bit version. I would download and try that before any of the other solutions given.

I just looked up what i think may be your processor type. There are a few models offered. In different sockets. 478, 775. Intel's site is showing the 540/540J series with HT technology, as a 32 bit processor and the 640 series in a 775 package supporting 64 bit.

Again hope this helps. I'm really trying for you.

Hey blacknight thank you so much for the persistant replies.

The pc at question, was a 32bit machine and what you suggested, by taking out all extra pheripherals and try installing, made lots of sense. Ive been in IT for 17yrs so i know what your train of thought on this is.

I solved the problem by installing it on another pc. A Core Two Duo HP pc with 2gb of ram and so on. It worked perfectly. So either there was a faulty part in the old pc ( i thought it might be a ram module, so i replaced it and no difference) or Mint 12 just does not like a slow ass machine. LOL

Things are working now, thank you again :D
