no shutdown but only reboot

Postby bloemetjesgordijn on Sat May 05, 2012 5:18 am

Hi,

for some reason my system (Mint12 KDE 4.8 ) cannot shutdown... it restarts on a shutdown command.

In GUI on shutdown it reboots and in konsole (with command shutdown now -h) it reboots

Please help me

check if you have installed kexec-tools, if yes, uninstall it.

Thanks Wayne128, but I don't have kexec-tool installed...

Installed it though, but it didn't help

When I update KDe to 4.8, kdmrc was updated (and changed) I think the error is due to this

I have a few:
~$ locate kdmrc
/etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc
/etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc.dpkg-old
/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintSystem/adjustments/kde/kdmrc
/usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/kdm/kdmrc-ref.docbook

I do not know why this is happening. Generally shut down should work properly.

Just a guess. R u guys using 3 DEs

e.g. If you have Mint 12 LISA with Gnome + cinnamon and then you install KDE.

You wont find a shut down button in KDE, as KDE is not default DE.

So you will need to log out and then login to default desktop, where you will find a shut down option. Shut down should work

Generally, I use synapse (a keyboard launcher similar to Gnome-do) and type Shut down and hit enter. Rarely use menu to shut down

Incase you have 2 De, then you will have to change the login manager

In my case I had to change from GDM to KDM to get shut down menu. Then I could get shut down in both DEs

Open Control Center -> Login Window. On the General tab select Edit Commands. Change the Halt command from '/sbin/shutdown -h now' to /sbin/halt
You can leave the "Shut Down via mdm." comment argument as is. That fixed it for me.
