[SOLVED] Trouble booting new install of Mint 9 xfce

Postby Matt267 on Sat May 05, 2012 7:45 am

Hello all,

I just installed Mint 9 Xfce as a dual boot with Windows XP. Mint 9 live works well, the install seemed to go well. When I try to boot into mint 9, I get an error that reads: "error: unexpectedly disconnected from boot status daemon." There is some other text under that I can take a picture of if needed. I tried to boot into "recovery mode" but didn't know what option to choose from so I canceled out of it. Now when I restart, I still get the same error, but I also get a prompt to log in. I can log in but there is no GUI.

I remember reading online (can't find it again) that showed problems with old computers dual booting with large hard drives. This computer is a 10 year old e-Machine. I gave the XP partition 70GB and Mint 9 80GB.

Thanks for you help,

Matt

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I believe Mint 9 has long since reached end-of-life.

You probably are not able to also do the massive post-install updates.

There is a high probability that until these updates occur, you are going to see erratic performance.

The above is just a guess on my part.

Suggest that you install the latest version.

I thought 9 was going to be maintained until April 2013. Maybe I'll wait until 13 comes out. I was hoping for a LTS release.

As I said, it was a "guess" on my part. You are probably right on 9 being the LTS (I don't keep track of these things).

Were you able to do the big post install updates?

At the command prompt, I did try to do apt-get update, but it wouldn't connect to the Internet. I didn't check the md5sum of the disk  which I will do just to make sure the disk is ok. Then I might try mint 12. If that doesn't work I might further shrink the XP partition just in case the bios don't like the two OSs being so far apart. I'm hoping there's an easier fix though.

Re: [solved] Trouble booting new install of Mint 9 xfce

I thought it was solved. I made a new CD, installed it, and it booted. I restarted and installed the updates, and now it won't boot up. I get the same error as above and at the bottom of the screen I get: "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s! [plymouthd:314]"

Edit: I can't boot to the mint 9 live CD anymore. It brings me to a command prompt. I wonder if my HD is going?

Edit2: After trying to boot live cd, I restarted and it booted fine to the hd mint 9. Does anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions?

Edit3: The Disk Utility is telling me I have "1 bad sector" I'm going to make this thread as "solved."
