Can't login to my user account

I just got back from a business trip, and went to boot up my laptop which had been shut down at home for a week, and it won't let me login to my account.

I put in my password, and the login screen flickers to black for half a second, and then I'm presented with the login screen again. The same thing happens whether I choose Cinnamon, Gnome or Mate.

I just started using Cinnamon a few days before I left and this may have been the first time it was rebooted since then, but I'm not entirely sure.

I can login to an admin command line in Recovery Mode, and I can login to a guest account.

I'm just not sure where to start looking, and would appreciate any suggestions.

You have all of those DE on your system? I think I saw an answer to a similar problem that involved reinstalling the login manager package or whatever it is called; gdm or mdm or whichever it uses in your version...
