Can`t install Mint or any other operating system[SOLVED}

Postby foxpoint11 on Tue May 15, 2012 12:37 am

I have used Mint since Mint #2.My wife`s computer has Mint #7 on it but it is out of date and things like flash,java are not always working.I`ve tried Mint 12 back to Mint #9 and I get same message including Mint 9:please use correct kernel for your CPU,other errors say installdisk X686 please use 86-X64.that last error was from
x64 Mint #9 disk.Ubuntu will not install.
I think there my be a problem with her COMOS set up.
Computer has Athalon II,2.5 CPU.
My computer is working fine with Mint 12.

Athlon II cpu's are 64 bit. Download a 64 bit version of mint and it should install fine.

just as an experiment, what happens if you try a 32 bit version?

Are you sure your wife's computer is 64 bit? I kind of doubt it if her pc is going back to Mint 7. As a test, you can try installing the 32 bit version of Mint 12 on her pc.

Really doesnt make sense. you say a 64 bit cd is giving you a error that says it is a x86 cd and to use a 64 bit cd. I would do a integrity check on the cd or dvd's if you havent already. I would also do a memory check with memtest86. I really doubt it is any bios settings but it would help if you posted the make and model of the motherboard. You can always go in the bios and set defualt settings or even flash it to the newest bios. You can also try making a bootable USB flash drive mint installer to bybass the cd dvd altogether. That would rule out any hardware problems with the dvd/cd drive. Thats what i would start out trying if it was my puter

To all who tried to help,many thanks.
I finally got Mint,Deben,Xface to boot into a desktop.I did not install it as wife wants to back up her files.
How I did it I, am not sure what worked.
First I found a old G-Parted disk,10-9-08:it did not work on first boot.Next,I went into Mint 8`s control panel and checked settings.Came across Comp-Fusion and checked to see if all boxes were unchecked as it was a pain when I used the computer;i unchecked all boxes.Then rebooted and saw second partition on disk for storage was formated in fat32:I wondered what was going on, so I went into comos/bios settings,changed two settings but did not write them down,as i could reset them to default if I scewed up.
Rebooted with old G-parted;this time it worked.I was into an old fluxbox desktop.I checked partetions,all well, and rebooted with Mint 9 long life,it sat there for 15 minutes blinking,rebooted took out 9 and put in new Mint Deben,x-face.It booted to desktop very slowly,only 512 mgbs of ram.
Did not install it as I wanted to think about what to install.
What i will do is take everything off patition 2 that was formated in fat32 and reformat that partition in ntfs x64 or just give the whole disk to Mint and then put in a partion for storage.
I`m sorry I did not take notes on setting changes but this may help someone in the future.
