No GRUB Install During Maya Install

Postby Hflaxman2012 on Mon May 21, 2012 9:28 am

GRUB does not appear to be getting installed properly on my system during the 64 bit Cinnamon Maya install.

I restart after the system is supposedly there, and Win 7 is still starting up. I went back to 12 to test this theory out and GRUB was installed perfectly during that install. All this after restoring the Win boot record each time.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Yes, I'm having a very similar problem on Mint 13 MATE 32 bit edition. I install, then restart, and just end up getting a "grub-rescue" prompt afterward. I've tried installing from USB and DVD, each of which doesn't seem to work very well. With USB, I get a "failure to install GRUB" on /dev/sdb (flash drive partition), but I don't on DVD. I downloaded Super Grub 2 Disk (http://www.supergrubdisk.org/) and was able to boot either from Mint 13 or Windows XP. I just burned to CD, then chose the "Find any operating system" at the top. It takes a REALLY long time to detect everything (more than 5 mins, appears to hang at some points), and then it will give you at least 5-10 "error: device not detected" messages. But eventually, I think you'll be able to boot from either system. Now for getting GRUB working on the hard drive, that's something I have no clue how to do. :/

The new grub 2 is buggy. One choice is to install legacy grub ..

I had this issue too. I found out that the bootloader was actually installed in my other hard drive. When I changed the bios to boot from that drive, the Grub was there. I could choose Mint and Windows from there and it worked fine.

Try changing the bios setting if you have a 2nd physical drive.

Just reinstalled and set my boot drive to be my secondary, and as you mentioned, GRUB was there. Strange bird!

I have the same problem.
I have no secoundary Os and only one partition atm. When I boot the Bios splash screen appears and after that there is just a blinking string on the top left. No input is possilbe.
When I plug in my USB Stick with the Mint installation on it, it boots (but no grub).
I already tried to reinstall and reconfigure Grub (it detected everything just fine but it didn't change anything...same problem)

Does anyone have an idea?

Wow, I ran into a similar problem way back with LM9 (I haven't installed LM13 yet). Grub said it installed, but just plain didn't. The only thing I was doing differently from a default install, was trying to install Grub into a partition instead of the MBR (I was running a different boot manager at the time).

I finally found I had to install grub manually with a "sudo grub-install --force" command. Without --force, grub wouldn't install (spitting out useless technobabble for an error message), and the Mint installer didn't recognize the failure (I see that bug I filed about that is still open in launchpad and it's been a couple of years now).

Great to see Grub is still a mess  .

Anyway here's the link to my original post. Maybe it will help.

After a complete redownload and reinstallation Maya finally gets to her feet without help (boots without usb stick).
Grub still is too shy and doesn't want to appear.

Going to try habfans option now =)

From yesterday i am installing LM13 four time in 3 PC ( two MATE and the rest cinnamon ), but i didn't see this problem. Maybe because i am select manual partition ( something else option ) , LM13 have an option to select drive where boot loader is installing. I am install using unetbootin, and i am always install boot loader in sda ( not in sdb, sda1,sda2 etc). It's not problem for dual booting with windows XP.

I have the same problem ! Installed Mint on a secondary HD and grub is nowhere to be seen. Nothing was asked during installation (I tried twice), I guess Grub was installed no the second HD instead of the main one !?
Does anyone know how to reinstall the grub menu on the main partition of the first HD ?

I'm new in linux but I find somthing intresting with this problem. Correct me if needed please.

In the Maya instalation defoult options apear: "Device for boot loader installation: /dev/sdb" you must change this to "/dev/sda ATA ST325............." or the location you decide. In my case the "/dev/sdb" wasn't exist so it couldn't boot.

IT WORKS FOR ME!

I'm sorry for muy poor english, I speak Español!!! :P

Same thing happened with me. Installed Maya/Cinnamon as part of a dual boot with Win7 on an x64 PC, but no sign of GRUB and it boots straight to Win7. I suspect that because I installed it late at night I may have missed the option and it defaulted to Win7 (used to Ubuntu Install sequences).

I have Win7 on sda1, and had installed Mint on sda2. There are about a dozen partitions and logical volumes across sda, sdb and sdc as well (and I put a swap partition on sdb). So I should just install again in the morning (12:21am here just now)? What should I look for when installing Mint?
