Mint 13 MATE 64 bit locking up

Postby PJC on Thu Jun 07, 2012 5:54 pm

Hello

I have installed Mint Linux MATE 64 bit on a new computer and all is well except it randomly locks up. I thought it was due to ripping software I was using but it just did it when I was just renaming some directories.

It locks solid and has to be powered off. It has always locked up while doing some directory or file management (Moving files, renaming files etc.)

I cannot see any reference to anyone else having this problem.

Thank you for any assistance.

I have been using Mint for a couple of years on my Lenovo laptop and I cannot recall a more stable OS in my 30 of using PC (With maybe the exception of OS/2 in the 1990s)

Regards

Paul

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

hey I have the same - all works beautifully but just freezes from time to time - seems to happen more likely when no user input is received (e.g.) idle
left it playing last night a 10hours youtube video and didn't freeze
see system info below

I'm no expert but they look fairly different to my uneducated eye.

I'm happy to go back to 32 bit if it gives the stability I have always had with Mint but I would like to try a bit longer

Thank you for your reply

Mine locks up too. I find if I close the lid for a few seconds and let the screen turn off, then open the lid it has a few black flashes, maybe some blue, and then comes back to life most of the time. I'm not using any propriety drivers. It's a tad annoying, happens multiple times a day.

Having gone through various stability issues on my Sandybridge-E PC myself, I would first check the hardware.

First I would try memtest86+, create a bootable USB stick and boot into the memtext86+. Let it run for a couple of hours and check to see if you got memory errors. If yes, you may either need to tweak your memory / voltage settings in your motherboard BIOS, or update the BIOS firmware and tweak if necessary, or replace the memory.

If the memory is OK, the next step would be to check your drive(s) and/or power saving settings.

One last idea: search for ivy bridge issues with Linux. Ivy Bridge is quite new (bleeding edge?) and there may be some particularities with this hardware.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck!
