I finally got grub installed in the root as I needed it, now I am encountering a hang during boot. Removing quiet and splash shows the following last line at the hang:
* Starting CUPS printing spooler/server
I hit Ctl-Alt-F1 and see this last line there:
[drm] Initialized nouveau 0.0.16 20090420 for 0000:01:00.0 on minor 0
I retrieved some of the log files here in case you can discern the problem from there:

Thinking a bit more about this I booted the LiveDVD again on this system and saved copies of the various log files for comparison with those from the failing boot. You can see them here:

I have seen suggestions to get the output from inxi -Fc 0 and included that in the above logs. Here it is:
