X server won't start

Postby hunty6 on Wed Jun 27, 2012 3:42 pm

Hi! I am having issues with the X server wheb trying to boot my fresh install of mint 13. It keep giving me an error saying screens are found but none have a usable configuration.

Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Additionally, I now have another error :

ddsSigGiveUp: Closing log
Server terminated with error (1). Closing file.
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: No such file or directory
xinit: server error

I didn't have the xinit one at first, but now that i tried some modifications it shows up. I have searched google a lot, and these forums also, but I can't seem to find a fix that helps solve my case. I got to boot once after changing the GRUB settings and addind nomodeset on there, but the first thing I did when I got mint to boot properly was installing my graphical card's driver, and it seems like the current-update driver was a mistake.

Since I did that, I can't even get the X server to boot even with the GRUB mods. I would totaly like to copy the input of the log or my xconf file, but the best I could do is post a picture of it... As I am currently typing this message on my phone :)

If needed i'll type the log on my phone.

I'm using a Asus G51 with nVidia GeForce GTS 360M

Any help is greatly appreciated as I am currently struggling, looking down for fixes on my phone... I can have acces to another computer if needed.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Workaround issue ( if Mint would be a car, this would be its typical fault ) ..

I have tried the workaround already, the only problem is I can't boot without the live CD. As soon as I take it out and reboot I get to a black page asking me to log in, and a little bit after that I get a blue screen with the X server message...

I can't even get the GRUB menu, I got it once and now it won't show up again... The only menu I can get is the live CD's booting menu. I am probably doing something wrong with that fix, any chances you can help me out?

Thanks for the answer! Highly appreciated

EDIT : I forgot to run update-grub, I finally could boot without the live CD. Now i'm pretty sure if I install the post-release updates of my proprietary driver it will not boot anymore. Is there something I forgot to do or something I should do before trying to install them?

So far I have changed the argument in my /etc/default/grub for nomodeset, update grub and now I can boot.

Sorry for double posting! Little up here.

Got to boot by changing the /etc/default/grub and putting in nomodeset instead of quiet splash. However, I cannot install any proprietary driver. If I do so, I get the same problem. I tried changing the nomodeset for nouveau.modeset=1 (I saw somewhere it would work for GeForce) but after the reboot, all I got was a nice black screen, couldn't even enter any shell commands or do anything else.

So I re-installed mint again (for the what, 10th time now?) and changed the grub file.

I tried both proprietary drivers (the current-updates one and the recommended one) and none of them will do.

How do I solve this?
