GRUB config file resets itself to default

Postby KYJazzyJeff on Mon Jul 02, 2012 9:50 pm

I had made some adjustments to it in order to make the boot menu display properly (or at all for that matter). The changes worked, but somehow my config file had its defaults put back into it and I had to do the fix all over again. How on earth would something like this happen? :?

If you are using Grub 2 the grub.cfg file is automatically generated by update-grub. You are not supposed to edit it. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2

No! I wasn't talking about THAT config file, I was talking about etc/defaults/grub (well, I guess it's more like a script than a config file). The one you're supposed to run update-grub after you make changes to it. For some reason, those changes got undone.

If you want to "freeze" /etc/defaults/grub file, you can write-proctected it.
sudo chattr +i /etc/defaults/grub

If you want to modify the file, you must take write-protection off at first.
sudo chattr -i /etc/defaults/grub
