newbie has a problem installing mint

Postby jorrrkata87 on Tue Jul 03, 2012 3:45 am

Hello guys
i've read some topics in this forum but i couldn't find a problem like mine,so i made a topic.
Well i must say that i am normally a windows user yet just because the installation fails always at same place.
i tried to install linux mint 13 cinnamon and after it failed about 10 times i tried ubuntu and had the same problem.
live CD's work fine for both, but when i try to make a full install ,it lets me choose language and make sure that i have internet connection and enough free space, and when i press "continue" nothing happens ,cursor shows loading, disc stops spinning and my PC starts loading something(no idea what ,i just see the red light on the box).that happened maybe 25-30 times and i gave up.in only one of all these tries i jumped to the step where i can choose how to install linux mint, but then that finished same way.
Does any of you know any solution (maybe it's simple but i am a newbie :) )or maybe had the same problem and solved it somehow?
Thanks in advance for your reply and sorry for my poor english .

Hi, have you checked the md5sum of the iso you downloaded :) ?
(Also, another tip, try always to burn your OS CDs using a very low speed ;) )

Does your computer have enough memory? At least 512 MB is required.

Seems like it hangs when trying to detect disks and partitions. Maybe your harddisk has a problem? I had this on a netbook where the first sector with the partition table was bad.

Yes, if you tried installing various OS, then hard drive probably bad or errors. Try MHDD to check drive, you can use magic boot disk. http://hddguru.com/software/2006.02.10-Magic-Boot-Disk/ Be aware there are destructive tests and non-destructive, so back up data on the drive, if any.
rtfm - read the fine manual...

Well i read your replies and made a HDD check using the windows control panel and second time with easeus.
it found 1 bad sector at the first check and none at the second, but nothing had changed.then i asked my online friend for any advice and with his help i found out that my HDD get warmer than normal and thats why it was hanging at that stage of installation.
so i bought an HDD cooler and installed LM 13 without any problem.i like it.it's stable and not so heavy like my previous os (win7) and i think that i will stick with it.the only problem now is that i cant play my only game in my free time because its too dark and i can hardly see anything.i write the brightness commands in the console (i found them in the game forum) but nothing changes.i think that its from the graphic drivers and they just dont respond to the game, but before i do anything I'd like to see what you guys think of that and if you have any solution.i just can only add that my card is ATI HD4850 (the 512mb model) and that i tried with the additional drivers and with latest driver from amd site (v. 12.6 if i remember).thanks for your replies about HDD problem and thanks in advance for the next replies about graphics and i hope that we can solve it.
see you around :)
P.S. maybe its not the right place to write about graphics, but i will wait untill tomorrow to post in the right section(in case noone can help me solve it)
