How can I remove Linux Mint?

Postby kraken on Wed Jul 04, 2012 7:43 pm

I've had linux mint for a few days now and i have decided that it is not for me. I did a clean install with it so i have no other os. When i put and windows installation disk in linux does not let me boot into them. It stops at boot ready for some and others it just boots into linux. My recovery disc get booted into but they fail to install because that cant read the hard drive. How can i get rid of it. IT'S DRIVING ME INSANE!

Boot the Linux Mint LiveCD, use Partition Editor in the menu to erase current partitions and format your drive as NTFS.

Is your BIOS set to boot from a CD/DVD? If it is, and you have a Windows install DVD in the drive, you should be able to boot into that.

You do not need to remove Mint before installing Windows. Just be sure to partition and format inside the Windows installer.

Is this recovery disk something XP variant? If it is, probably SATA-drivers are missing, because old XP can be a poor combination with modern computer.

If your machine is, in fact, trying to boot off the disk in the CD/DVD drive, then that will happen before it tries to boot from whatever OS is on the hard disk.

It's been a long time since I installed Windows, but doesn't the install disk flash a momentary message to press a key to boot from the CD/DVD? Miss that, and the machine will try to boot from the first hard drive.

Also, Windows upgrade or Windows installation DVD's? The upgrades look for Windows on the drive.

A faulty DVD drive.

BTW. If you have a CD drive, Windows 7 DVD cannot boot from it ..

If a machine boots successfully from a CD or DVD or USB stick, or any other external device, no attempt is made to boot from the hard drive.

To boot from another device, that device must be working, must contain a bootable image, and the machine's BIOS must be set to attempt to boot from the device before it attempts any other devices. E.g., if you have a bootable Linux system on a hard drive, and try to boot from an unbootable DVD or try to boot from a faulty CD/DVD drive, the BIOS will transparently roll over and boot from the hard drive.

Since the machine can boot from a CD but is not booting from a Windows DVD, and assuming you are using a DVD drive, then the DVD must have a problem. Look for scratches; try a gentle cleaning.
