Install on USB Stick - How to?

Hello,

I already got my USB Stick running the LIVE Version of Linux Mint 4.0. That system is not possible to customise. Therefore I wanted to install it on another USB Stick. After the installation I restarted the system and using GUMP and booting from the USB Stick will not start LInux. Does the USB Stick needs some kind of MBR? Or are there programs that check an installation if it is bootable?

Step 17 might need some modification depending on the differences between a Ubuntu and Mint LiveCD.

My question actually is how to install it on the USB Stick instead of installing it on a normal hard drive. I used the LIVE CD to install on the USB Stick but when it re-boots there is just a black screen displaying "j_"
What is the guided installation doing wrong when installing on an USB Stick?

And by the way, aren't those suggested topics you both recommended for booting a LIVE system from a USB Stick?
Sorry for asking first and trying later. I haven't tryed those suggestions yet but if you say that those ways have to be done, I will do it.

There is no way to officially boot Linux Mint on USB with persistant changes as far as I know.
That guide I gave a link for, shows you how to properly install LiveCD to USB, then with some sort of hack or config, allows it to save the changes on USB.

Some smaller distro's offer USB installs directly from the LiveCD installer like Wolvix (which I use on my USB and works great).
