Hm, this is really weird. If I were you, I'd try burning the Mint image again, maybe something is wrong with the CD. Use the slowest burning speed. Or if you can, try booting it from a USB stick.

Hi, sorry for the late reply.

I reburned at lowest speed and had the same problems. I also tried the 32 bit edition at lowest speed and it was the same.

I installed 32 bit on my netbook with no problem though! :?

I would first try to put your Linux Mint Maya on a USB stick. You can use unetbootin http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ from Linux, Windows or Mac - in that case download the Linux Mint Maya ISO you want and choose it from the unetbootin menu (see webpage). Or Linux Live USB creator from Windows http://www.linuxliveusb.com/en/supported-linuxes (haven't tried it, though).

What is your hardware, by the way?

I never managed to install the last Mint Edition. I also had problems trying to install Mint 14.

This time it wouldn't give any console things just an empty grey box.

For other reasons I was tweaking the bios today and saw it was in IDE mode so I switched to AHCI. Windows 7 seemed to be already configured to use it even though I installed in IDE... Then I thought oooh maybe this is why Linux Mint wouldn't get near loading..

I restarted and put linux mint 32bit mint usb drive in and booted from it.. I saw the grey square.. but it didn't just crash and hang there it booted right up! Woohoo!

I've now put 64bit on the usb drive and i'm going to restart and hopefully it will install and I can have linux again yaaaay!!

Until now to use linux I have had to use my netbook which is tiny and difficult :P

I'll let you know my results!

Edit: Fixed.

Thanks for sharing this information - after such a long time has passed. I would have never thought about IDE mode - I thought it was long dead :? . So AHCI fixed it?

AHCI might have fixed it. The reason I was in my BIOS is because I noticed in CPU-ID my memory was in unganged mode and I wanted to put it ganged. While I was there I had a browse and noticed ahci mode wasn't on.

So it could have been one of those two things. I can't see how either would affect it though. Ganged just means all cores access all ram, unganged = 1 stick of ram per core. I'd have thought Linux supported either option. And as I said I installed the same distro on my netbook when that had IDE mode on (because I have used XP on it and that does not like AHCI mode for some reason).

It was a nice relief to finally have Linux again, I spent all weekend installing things and tinkering :) It feels so refreshing! Especially mint lol
