Encrypt my personal files

Postby earthling on Sat Jul 28, 2012 11:15 am

Hallo:-) I just installed Linux Mint on a friend's computer and on the live system I clicked the option "encrypt my personal data". In Ubuntu upon the first reboot one is being asked to generate an encryption passphrase automatically. In Mint I suppose that needs to be done through the terminal? If yes, how?

Thanks

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I don't know which application the ubuntu GUI launches to encrypt your /home directory for example, but you can find out by checking the properties of that launcher (the interface that load/executes a program), in which you would find the application name and any parameters being used.

You could also, in a terminal choose an encryption application such as bcrypt or truecrypt or any other of your choosing: see which one you prefer, either via reviews (gives you an idea) or by installing and testing one of more types, and using a practice directory, before making your final selection.

Another item worth consideration is a password manager: enables you to keep a fairly good password passphrase that you can remember to get into your list of passwords..

Super thanks for your help. Meanwhile I found out that an encrypted hard drive in your luggage is being treated as weapons smuggling in the russian federation and since we go there a lot...

Ubuntu doesn't really use a GUI for it, they have a message in the notification icon that then opens the terminal which prompts you to enter your password. But as I say... won't be possible to install that now.

Thank you very much for your help
