ASUS Eee 900 help instaling Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon

Postby Micu on Thu Aug 02, 2012 3:41 pm

Hi All,

I am not able to install Linux Mint in my Asus 900 :( it will not boot !!

I am a happy user of Mint 11, my machine has two drives 4 Gb.+ 16 Gb.
and usually use the 4g mounted with / and the 16 Gb. drive for home with
no problems.

I have LinuxMint 13 Cinnamon in a SD-card and is working fine , but cant make a
permanent install !!

looking at the drives with Gparted there seem to be a lot of space In the 4Gb drive
for the system . the only strange thing is that it seem the drives ar not mounted.

Please if possible give step by step instructions as I am new to Linux.

Thanks in advance

Martin

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I've had something similar trying to install Mint 13 Cinnamon on an Asus EeePC netbook. My problem, as far as I can tell, and I'm absolutely no expert, is something to do with the UEFI bios (UEFI is a new system meant to replace BIOS). The little computer is fine running Mint 12, but something is not right with Mint 13 (or just one of its upstream components at least) and UEFI, which I gather Asus is using almost exclusively now. Same as you, I could run 13 off a USB stick but a permanent installation turned bad. I Googled and found a number of very technical, and to me mostly illegible, workarounds, but since I only know enough about computers to be dangerous I decided to take the cowardly route of reverting to Mint 12.

How old is your machine? Does it use UEFI instead of BIOS? I may be barking right up the wrong tree here, but hopefully I've given you a clue.

There is not enough space on you 4GB partition. LM 13 needs at least 5,9GB on /.

You should not be installing cinnamon on that machine... Cinnamon is a "heavy"desktop that relies on gpu acceleration and is still relatively cpu heavy.

Honestly would be amazed if MATE ran well on it either. Heck gnome 2 on mint 11 I'd expect to give you some slowdowns.

I too have an old eeepc 900... For those wondering those are first gen 900mhz celeron processors with a screen Res of 800x480.

Really the only "modern" Ubuntu derivative I got working on mine decently was WattOS, then turned it into my 2 year old daughters education system.

well it seem i will keep with Mint 11 and gnome 2 !!

Cinamon works quite nice in my USB card ( 8 MB) so maybe is as you say
a matter of spacein my drive :(

Thaks to all for your replies
