Exactly what occured?

Post by unet01 »

installed mint maya to a usb flash drive using universal usb Installer , system was installed and restarting, i used my entire drive partion, so as the pc is restarting and i removed the usb stick a message appeared...

turned on the pc and it said nothing to boot on the hd, i enterted the usb stick and booted from it and the opearting system booted but did not install itself on the hdd? then where is it? i need to select boot from flash drive and there i can access everything, even if i remove the flash drive and download and save files everything is still there. where did the os install itself?

not sure how this is possible? i think it was caused by the removal of the usb upon restarting because i removed it during the restart countdown

From your live usb open a terminal and type:

sudo fdisk -l

-l is a lower case -L
try:
sudo blkid

try:
sudo os-prober

Do you see Mint?
If you do try boot-repair. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair
You can down load it and install it to your live media temprorary.

Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes << hd

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 2048 973150207 486574080 83 Linux

Disk /dev/sdb: 8004 MB, << usb flash

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 * 2048 15632383 7815168 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT

the usb was supposed to install into sda1 but installed itself upon sdb1....

confusing.

Hello.
What I see here on sba1 is formatted to linux, which is
your first hard drive.
and sdb1 if formated for windows, which is your second hard
drive.
It look like the install went for your firs hard drive.
Did you want linux running on one drive and windows
on the other and select which one on boot up? Or
did you want no window's for right now?

If you chose total disk/system install you don't get boot loader selection on boot up.
Only on duel boot, custom boot, "somtheing else install".
I may be wrong because I have only done mult installs. working on a system.
But still you should have booted into Mint on boot up.
