just upgraded from 13 to 14 (my first upgrade using Mint's "fresh install upgrade"). It failed to accept my present (v13) user, so I created a new one for v14. It then said that it could not restore previously installed applications (or words to that effect).

When I restarted and used the new user, it stated that this user did not own its own home directory! I've managed to sort this out by (using "sudo caja" from a terminal added to the panel) changing the owbership from user 1001 to the new user (created during the install).

What on the earth is user 1001 and why does Mint use this method of upgrade?

For more years than I care to remember I have been successfully upgrading my Ubuntu installs, using the supposedly risky package upgrade method, and yet the first time I try the Mint fresh install upgrade it fails!

Isn't it time for a re-think here guys?

How can I upgrade LM13 to 14 without clean install? The sources.list is empty.

mint doesn't have or recommend in-place upgrades

I know, but solvable somehow? My friend can't install the 14 for this error message:
"Unable to boot – please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU."

Update is the last chance for him.

Read the release notes, Mint 14 requires a PAE enabled cpu, if you don't have this then it's not going to work no matter how you install.
