it seems that my 'test PC' - has no pae support,
so, after working out, just why 'Nadia' won't install,
- the installer crashes, just after searching for other O/Ss & without copying any files. .. ..

I am left wondering why pae support is enabled, by default in Nadia ?

I thought that pae was to give a 32bit system, axcess to memory above 3.125Gb . . .
- ie the same as 64bit O/Ss.

so, just what is the advantage of enabling / installing pae??
- apart from memory ??

does this also apply to a 64bit O/Ss - as well ???

Ubuntu, the parent of Mint, has decided the default system to support for modern PCs is 64-bit, and dropped support for a non-pae kernel. If you want non-pae kernel support, you can still find it at LMDE, if you have less than 3 G RAM. pae does not normally have any effect for 32-bit processors with less than 3 G RAM, but kicks in when attempting to address more than 3.125 G RAM. Before pae, you simply could not address any memory in the block set aside above 3 G RAM for operating system and video needs.

64-bit versions already support more than 4 G RAM, so don't need the pae extensions in the kernel, but do require a 64-bit processor.

this system only has 2Gb ram, & doesn't support PAE.

So, since I actually prefer the Mint main edition, - & therefore I am locked out from using anything higher than LM 13 :(
one of the reasons for using Mint, is that the Mint Team, reverses & sometimes even removes things that are made upstream . . .
eg:- Control_Alt_backspace - which is used to force a X restart, when your system locks up.

The other way, around this, would be to install a non-pae kernel & remove the pae kernel & then remaster Mint 14
a convoluted process, indeed . . .

Even though the Ubuntu sales team may like this idea & think that it can effectively shut out a chunk of users, from any future releases
- can Mint afford to do the same?.
- there is still a lot of users, out there, with 32bit h/w, that will move away from Mint, if they, like me, cannot use a Mint version higher than Mint 13 . . . .
