I tried a apt upgrade of Linux Mint 14 from 12 using http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/62
I do not want to try a fresh install now, and would like to get this fixed. I had tried the APT method for 11->12 and it worked after some issues here and there.
So when i tried this method, the dist-upgrade started downloading some 500gigs(if i remember correctly) and at the end there was some errors. I did the 'apt-get upgrade' and before reboot i tried a 'inxi -Sr' but it still showed Linux Mint 12. So i rebooted and now it just hands in the boot screen, its like a loop of the boot screen (with the 5 dots turning white from green). I can access ttyl via ctrl+alt+f2 though.
Any help would be of great help.

Unless you were using KDE or Xfce, I don't think this will be easy to fix. From Linux Mint 12 to 13 a lot has changed that may not make it very easy to fix this. Unless you were using KDE or Xfce, I recommend you do a reinstall ( http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2). It's recommended for a reason you know, as one if five upgrades as you have done will result in an unbootable system.
