Hello,

I am trying to fresh-install Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon 64bit version on my laptop (Pentium dual-core T3200; 4GB RAM; Intel graphic card). It boots to the selection menu (Start LM/Start in compatibility mode/Memtest/Boot from HDD) from USB and/or DVD (tried both).

No matter whether I try normal or compatibility mode, after a blank screen in first case and a few lines of text in the second the computer restarts and boots into an existing Win7 64bit.

The same thing happened while trying to install Arch Linux 64bit, however I had no problem with Arch 32bit. Right now I will try with LM 14 Cinnamon 32bit.

Any ideas?

[UPDATE] As expected LM 14 Cinnamon 32bit works perfectly.

apparently it doesn't like 64 bit editions of linux
this could be caused by a bios setting for the hard drive
some sata drives needed to be set to ide mode to install linux
but some machines will run the live cd but after install all you will get is the system constantly rebooting itself

I 've tried both with IDE and AHCI mode selected, no change.
And yes, after crash the system reboots in whatever is on primary boot medium (for me HDD).

have you tried to install the 32 bit versions or just booting them to live cd/dvd?
were you trying to install dual boot?
some systems with win 7 64 bit had a bios setting for secure boot and it would not let you install linux unless it was disabled!
(another reason among many for my irritation with the ms software family) and why i went to linux many years ago

I actually installed 32bit version, but he 64bit version wouldn't even boot to live CD.
Yes, I have dual boot system with Win 7 64bit.
I will check the bios.

Update:

I have successfully installed Ubuntu Studio 12.10 64bit edition. I still can't install the new LM.

Any ideas?

Im found out the problem was with my upgraded RAM.

Simply adding mem=4096m to boot parameters solved the problem.
