leo5111,
Use sudo instead in Gnome. If you need to start a GUI app in KDE as root use kdesu. Examples:
Gnome ---- gksu gedit /somefolder/somefilename
KDE -------- kdesu kate /somefolder/somefilename
For terminal commands in both KDE and Gnome:
sudo apt-get install someprogram
I can see no need to ever be logged into the GUI as root. In fact, I always advise Ubuntu/derivative users not to even set a root password.

Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and each time expecting a different result.
Democracy is 2 wolves and a lamb voting on the menu. Liberty is an armed lamb protesting the electoral outcome. A Republic negates the need for an armed protest.
