Fresh Mint bites

So...newly upgraded computer: i7-3930K, Asus P9X79, 32GB, dual GTX 670 4GB, Windows 7 SP1 and its silly 100MB boot partition.

Installed Mint/Cinnamon 64-bit from a burned DVD, no problem.

From the GRUB menu, Memtest86+ selected, some unknown thing goes wrong and I end up back at the GRUB menu.

Linux Mint selected, loads the GUI login, lets me type in the username and password I entered during install but dies some horrible death leaving me at the login screen again with no explanation of what happened.

The thing that bugs me the most is that Mint seems to put so much effort into hiding what's going on in the background from the user that he's left with nothing to go on, not even some esoteric error code.

Long story short, wiped it out with Win7's bootrec.exe using /Rebuildbcd, /FixMbr and /FixBoot sequentially and everything seems to be back to the way it was before Mint, but I'm not certain and I am left with the question of just what went wrong with the install.

Edit: FYI though I am not unfamiliar with Linux in general, I am far from an expert and have never used any version of Mint before.
