This is a post I put up over at the Ubuntu Forums, but I thought I'd throw it up here too in case someone might know the answer. I'm thinking this is a good one for me to ask Fred. If anyone has a clue on this let me know. I'm totally stumped.

I've got a question pertaining to a change I noticed in Hardy. Let me give you my setup first. I am running a Tri-boot system with Windows XP, Edubuntu 8.04, and Linux Mint Daryna (based on Gutsy Gibbon).

In the past with both Gutsy Gibbon and Mint Daryna I have always mounted my other partitions in /media in folders named after what they are. For example in my Mint installation I have my Windows partition mounted in /media/Windows. So in the Places menu it simply says Windows. When I open a Nautilus window over in the left pane under places in says Windows. I like this. It makes it easy to identify what partitions are what by having the mounted folder names display in this fashion.

Now here is my problem. In Hardy (my Edubuntu installation) in the Places menu, and in the Nautilus Places pane it is not displayed this way. It just says something like "35 gig partition" for Windows, instead of "Windows". All my partitions are doing this. Yet when I look in /media all are mounting in the correct folders just as I've assigned in fstab. So what gives with the Places menu. Does Hardy no longer use the mount folder name in Places?

Any guidance is appreciated, and if you are having the same issue let me know here. If I find the answer somewhere else I'll post back.

I haven't looked at Hardy so it would be hard for me to say what is happening there. It sounds as if there is a separate script that is picking up the folders independently.

I think what I would do first is see if a label made any difference. Use Gparted and assign a partition label of say "Windows" to that ntfs partition, and see if that changes anything.

Ok I looked at the partitions in gparted, and I saw where you can set an overall drive label, but not a partition label. ????

I apologize, the version of Gparted on Mint is too old to do this. You must have version .3.6.6 or higher. You can download and burn the live Gparted cd if you wish. Try one of the ways below to do it. I know the first method works on NTFS but don't know if Mint has this tool on it. I don't have an NTFS partition to test it on. The other ways I have work on Linux partitions and might work on NTFS. I just don't know.

Show NTFS label:

ntfslabel <device>

Change label:

ntfslabel <label> <device>

Where:
* <label> = your new label
* <device> = your partition to label


Use the command below to set a partition label

e2label /dev/sdxx NewName

If a NewName is left off, the command displays the current label

or

tune2fs -L NewName /dev/sdxx

If a NewName is left off, the command displays the current label

Thanks for the info. I actually found an interesting work around for this, which you will see mentioned in my other post, where we were discussing my other issue with the Edebuntu install. What I did was change the folder where the drives are mounted to from /media to a new folder I created called /partitions (updated fstab of course). By doing this the system no longer puts drive icons in the "Places" menu for the partitions at all. I then simply did a click and drag on the new sub folders for each partition and drug them over to the Places menu to create shortcuts. These new shortcuts show in both the "Places Menu", and the "Places Pane" in Nautilus, but they do not show at all in the kids account, which is what I wanted. I see them, labeled exactly as I want them, and the kids don't seem at all.

I did copy and save the info you posted here for future use though. Thanks again as always!
