Mint 14 will not boot after install

Postby IAmSam1 on Sun Jan 13, 2013 2:59 pm

I am doing a plain install of mint 14 on a HP Compaq dc5850s. It is the only operating system on this box, no dual boot.

The install goes fine & I reboot, on boot up I just get a prompt saying "grub rescue>"

How do I get mint to work?

Booting off the live cd works fine, but I want to install mint.

I did the install with mint 13 & got the same result.

HELP!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

You could try booting from Super Grub2 Disk / Rescatux which is able to fix grub problems

I will try that, I did run a boot rescue program that I saw in a google search but it did not fix the problem.

I gave the Super Grub2 a try & the Super Grub2 CD I burned comes up with grub rescue> prompt. I burned a CD with Rescatux & booted it, get the same grub rescue> prompt. So I downloaded Super Grub1 & it actually booted but every attempt to fix the MBR failed & attempts to boot the OS failed. It did see the Linux partition.

Any other ideas?

Before I blew it away with the mint install this computer hgad XP on it & seemed to work just fine.
