mint cnamon 14.1x64 installation problem (With win7x64)

Postby wolf1_o on Tue Jan 15, 2013 8:42 pm

Hi,

I have a desktop with win7x64 installed. I Just installed the mint cinnamon 14.1 from a USB-Flash drive. After resolving some network issues (for some reason I had to disconnect/reconnect my wired modem and then the Linux established connection...but this is another issue:-) )I installed the system. At first I started to install but wasn't sure whether to do a "side by side" installation, so after it finished copying the files, I started the setup again, chose "custom", deleted the "ext4" partition of the space I allocated for the Linux and did the installation again. It finished, restarted but the windows booted again!
So I ran the install again from the usb-fdd and again the installation ran without any issues, but when it restarted, again it booted to windows. What's more strange, I tried to choose "boot from hard drive" from the usb-fdd installation menu, but nothing happens and after a second it gets back to the menu, like the system wasn't installed at all!

What else can I try to do?Should I try to delete the Linux partition and start the setup again, choosing "side by side" this time without regretting (like I did at the first time, see above) and hoping I didn't messed the things too much?

Please help, I'm quite lost:-(

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

hi wolf1_o and welcome to Linux Mint,

It sounds like for some reason the grub boot loader is not being installed.

you can try running boot repair found at the page listed below and see if it corrects the problem.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

follow the instructions for burning the ISO to a CD and boot from the CD.

Hi,
I ran the repair - did it from the linux install (on the usb stick) terminal and it did ok: Now I'm getting the menu as soon as the pc boots, which the following options:
1. linux mint (with some more details..)
2. linux mint (same as above) but with "(recovered)"

after that there are two (3 & 4) memory tests options, and after that for some reason I see three options of windows....should it be like that?I chose one and it started OK...I'm just wondering if it's OK and is there something to do about the second option from above - the one with the "recovered".

Thanks!

That's pretty much normal The recovery entry for linux is in case there are problems down the road it will allow you to get to a terminal to do repairs.

As for the memory test you don't need them but I'd leave them for now.
and the three windows entries must be that you have three different windows partitions on that machine.

Let me know if you want to make windows the default entry and I'll tell you how to do that.

Glad it's working for you though.
