How much space is needed on USB for making it bootable?

Hi,

I'm downloading the .iso for the 32 bit Linux Mint with Mate. Its own size is 966 MB. I would be using UNetBootin to make a bootable USB out of this .iso. I'm currently on Windows. How much disk space do I need on my USB stick? I have currently about 997 MB, is that enough or do I need a 2 GB USB?

It's recommend you have a 2 GiB USB, though it may work with less. I'm not sure 997 MB will be enough. Though the website says 966 MB, the notation should actually read 966 MiB. That is actually 1013 MB. (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes; 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes.)

UNetBootin may work fine. Linux Mint recommends the Universal USB Installer for Windows users: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal- ... -as-1-2-3/. Step 1 is to select the Linux Mint version you want to install, step 2 to browse to where you have the ISO.

I agree with the above a 1G flash drive might be too small, however - Pendrive linux - who recommended that?

Universal USB Installer was recommend by another user, here viewtopic.php?f=29&t=122605, because the tutorial on the Community site still had the rather spartan looking Image Writer listed only for Windows users. I've tried both methods on a Windows laptop from work, and subsequently Clem added the Universal USB Installer link to the tutorial. You are free to submit your own tutorials for alternative ways to make a USB stick with the Linux Mint ISO.
