I don't think it's a Linux bug, the card reader is simply not bootable (if the BIOS doesn't see it at boot time). So this thread was not really an installation/boot problem, rather a hardware limitation. I have a new SAMSUNG "Series 3" laptop and its card reader is not bootable either, however the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports are. You too were able to boot these on my suggestion (above), so that's the way it goes with most laptops these days.

PS: I have a Transcend USB 3.0 card reader RDF5, it's VERY compact and when paired with UHS-I flash cards it's reading at 82MB/sec!
