Help with freeze problems

Postby Guest on Wed May 14, 2008 4:26 am

Hi there,
I started to try Ubuntu with virtualBox and later with Wubi.

The first one went well but as Ubuntu could not see my hardware trough VB I was prepered for the next step and did it with Wubi. Problems started here.
Everytime (with Life CD or after installation) Ubuntu reaches the desktop after login/password it freezes within a few seconds. Sometimes he let me start firefox but the final resault is allways the same. No mouse and no Keyboard.

So I tryied to obtain some answers from Ubuntu experts with this topic http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=791412 but somehow they must think Im some kind of windows spy or something couse the help was not so helpfull...

The first replies guieded me to linux mint and here I am.

I burned linix mint 4.0 to an dvd and that went well and tried it out on my pc at home. Very nice look and feel starting and reaching the desktop, but then the same thing appens. It freezes.
Im not sure If I should even try to install it as i did with Ubuntu couse im afraid the end its the same. Im not willing to give up on linux couse im feedup with windows but You guys understand that I need to have it running in order to learn it.

What should I do?

My system specs are in the topic above.

Thanks in advance

I am disgusted by the response you got in the Ubuntu forum, luckily we don't have much of that sort here and they risk being kicked out for that kind of behaviour
However your problem is very hard to solve i fear
You get to see the desktop. How does GDM look? (GDM is where you log in)
If it is as it should you should be able to choose session and among them "Failsafe gnome"
Try this - it may work as you are so close to success
And welcome to Mint

Thanks. Im feeling welcome :)

Ok. Im so noob at linux that hurts, and with that in mind must tell step by step what im doing in order I can help you to help me.

1 - DVD with linux mint 4.0 on DVD tray and restart system with DVD as first boot disk.
2 - Linux starts with boot menu and presents me with 3 options. The first one is "Run linux Mint". I do it.
3 - Booting process show linuz boot screen as it stars with progress bar and ends in Linux Mint Desktop showing everything nice. Mouse at this point is stil working and Im happy.
4 - It lets me navigate for a while and even start firefox or whatever I try to do, but at this point system hangs and I lose keyboard and mouse.
5 - Restart system forcing it with hardware button.

This is it. Can that be hardware incompatiblity?

Ok this can be a driver problem - did you install drivers?
If not don't do anything except start Envy the next time and let it install drivers
If it gets all white there is a post about that here
viewtopic.php?f=42&t=12411
(not sure if Envy ng supports text mode)

Ok,

Here I am with fresh news. Mint started with ISO burned on DVD and I went to envy. THis is what it reported:

Build essencial Envy is unable to run because of the lack of the folowing packages:
Xserverxorg-dev envy is unable to run because of the lack of the folowing packages:
Module-assistent Envy is unable to run because of the lack of the folowing packages:
Fakeroot Envy is unable to run because of the lack of the folowing packages:
DH-make Envy is unable to run because of the lack of the folowing packages:
Deb Helper Envy is unable to run because of the lack of the folowing packages:

Dpatch

Please install them manualy and launch envy again.

Next I went to Daryna Button at bottom and system froze as usualy. No mouse and no keyboard. Thats it.

Thanks in advance.

So this is Daryna KDE
From the error messages it seems that the DVD is faulty
For some reason I've missed that possibility above
Did you check the md5sum and burned slowly

I downloaded de Mint Main edition from the choices presented to me.
It is the right one? Is there an Daryna gnome?

Burned the ISO with CDBurnerXP - burn ISO image at 24X er...
I did check it with md5sun that presented me with a signature composed with many numbers but did`nt know how or where to compare it.

I dont mind to make an new download and restart all the process but I have not unlimited downloads from my ISP so i will do it tomorrow from work.

Very sorry for trouble. can you do an "install Mint for dummies" kind of tutorial?
It could be usefull to others like me in the future.

Thanks again.

Checked again the version downloaded at page http://linuxmint.com/download.php
The thirth option is the one I chose - Main Edition Gnome CD 688MB
My ISO file is 705.180 KB

WinMD5Sun gave me these - 572a56ec165ef6ad8f785cc7f13a5a14 whitch I believe it is the correct one.

Can I try to burn it at a low speed?
