Mint boot fail

Hello guys!
I have a big problem with my very old notebook. I cant install Ubuntu or Mint because everytime after the startup loading screen (with the dots) appears - i get a strange pixeld screen which is maybe from a bad driver. Mint is now telling me something nouveau some nubers and faled to idle channel 2 or 3. Maybe there is the graphic card (NVIDIA GeForce 8400M) driver missing - but how can i install a driver when even mint is not booting...
