How to set video mode for Console?

Postby jdupre on Mon Mar 04, 2013 6:37 pm

I installed Mint 13 and all was good. I then issued the command "sudo update-rc.d mdm disable" to boot to command prompt rather than the GUI.
Unfortunately, the monitor doesn't like the resolution that is used for text mode, and tells me "Cannot Display This Video Mode." How do I go about fixing this?
The video card is ATI Rage XL. Monitor is a Dell 1907FPt with a native resolution of 1280x1024.

(I found a monitor that I can use temporarily that works in both text and GUI, so I do have access to the system to make any necessary change to support the Dell monitor.)

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

And the answer is...

Install grub-customizer.
Run grub-customizer.
Select a custom resolution under the Appearance settings. (640x480 worked for me.)
Save.
Reboot.

You can probably do without installing grub-customizer and just edit the grub files if you know what you are doing.
