Attempted to install Mint 14 KDE on existing system that has Kubuntu 12.10 already installed. Installation from a DVD that was checked for integrity.
Used Manual partition editing to install Mint 14 on an empty partition and to re-use the existing /home directory which is in its own partition. I have done this dozens of times with many Linux distros but the Mint 14 installer just quits and returns to the initial desktop display.

The installation will proceed if I do not attempt to re-use the existing /home but it creates a new empty /home directory in what I want to keep as the OS only partition.

Is there a work-around for this or must I wait until the installer is fixed?

Hmmm strange so on manual partitioning.
1) created partition for root and assigned / to it and selected format it?
2) assigned /home and unselect the format it so it stays intact
3) assigned same swap? shouldn't really matter tho.

As have used that procedure before myself without issue.
Maybe someone more knowledgable will chime in and unravel the mystery.
For me it is usually something I thought I did right and ended up wasn't the case.

I take your point about thinking I had done everything right then finding that I did not....... yes it happens so I usually try about three times however that still does not guarantee that finger memory will not fail me.

The one thing I did not do, that your reply brought to mind, was to assign the existing swap but I don't recall ever having to do that before. Since this hardware has 4 Gb of Ram, swap should not be necessary anyway.

But I will give that a shot and see if it makes a difference.

Following up on suggestion of Orbmiser to re-assign the swap as well as the /home partition.

That cannot be done because as soon as I try to re-assign the /home partition, the installer quits and returns to the initial screen so I cannot even highlight the swap partition to re-assign it.

There is definitely something broken in the installer, yet the install disk checks out and will do a complete automatic install on a clean hard drive.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this?
