Mint 13 on a USB Stick?

Postby jamied_uk on Wed Mar 27, 2013 11:46 am

what version mint and environment will be best to my on my usb bootable 32 gb memory stick and whats the best option for installing this so that it usb boots and allows me to run live mint 13 i have tryed 14 but didnt login correctly

i ran it on a 3200 gh machine with 512mb ram and nvidia graphics card (gt 5600)

UPDATE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ironikly i used universal usb installer (using windows) and it even downloads the mint or other files needed to do it (mostly 32 bit) and it worked 1st time and is accessable from both linux and windows which was also a problem.

So this for me at least its problem solved! hope this will help anyone stuck with any issues with login booting or accessing and creating usb bootable version of a live mint 12 or newer os.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Although the full featured distros will run on a "usb stick", the performance is not that great unless your "USB stick" has very good read/write speed. However, an external USB hard drive will improve things greatly and often gives near internal hard drive performance for most every day tasks.

For your target machine, you might have better luck with a distro that loads itself into ram (so very little read/write from/to USB stick). An example would be PuppyLinux.

For LM13, the XFCE version is probably the lightest for resources.

http://youtu.be/gVCfeFOxGLQ External install. Use the fastest flash drive you can get. Ok for the browsing & docs or testing but far too slow for anything interesting . External hard drive installs are multiple times faster than on flash drives but these are hampered by the usb transfer rate. - if you had a usb3 caddie and usb3 ports it would almost as good as an internal drive - sata 2.

Saying that, a OLD 5400 speed ide hdd on usb2 works very well, until last Nov thats all I used.

Excellent video, if I got an eSATA ExpressCard 54 and hooked it to a dock, would that work, I have a dock for SATA drive with an eSata port as well as usb2, along with a second hand 120GB SATA HDD.

I would think so, possible transfer speeds of 3gb/s - Just like its installed.

You would just need the external sata disk recognised at boot. - It would be by usb but I dont have a sata dock via external sata connection so cant really say but I suspect it would.
