"Install" works but gui looks split and crazy

Hi, so I used the plop bootloader cd to attempt to install:

linux mint mate 32 bit

from a flashdrive on this old pentium 3 / 2 gig ram laptop.

It works up until trying the live demo and that seems to hang.

The install option gets further though, but once it gets in the gui with mouse support it looks crazy, like eight splitscreens all pixilated and unreadable. I assume the nomodeset apcioff thing might fix this but I don't know how to set it. Any help appreciated, thanks.
