Cannot login

Postby buteman on Tue Apr 16, 2013 11:32 am

I have just installed Mint 14 cinnamon 64 bit. I cannot login even though I know the user and password are correct.
I have installed it twice just in case i had mis-typed the password
I am not a newbie having started with slackware 3.4 and also now run ubuntu 12.04 on my other machine so i though ok login as root and change my user password.
No can do so is there a problem with the distro or is it someting else.
Obviously I cannot sudo or su as I cannot get to it.
Can I interrupt the boot process and start in single user mode?
I tried firing up the install disc, mounting the root partition and chrooting but that doesn't work either.

What desktop environment are you using (and what login manager)? KDE had that problem after an update recently.

i am using the default Cinnamon setup.

Update

I have now installed the 32 bit cinnamon and it works fine so I guess its a problem with the 64 bit version.
