Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

It would be helpful to know just what it is you are intending to install in that VM. For example, 8GB won't be enough if you intend to, say, install Mint 14 KDE and update KDE itself to a later version. But then, maybe you intend to install LMDE, or MATE or Cinnamon edition. Only you know so far.

Either install using the automatic installer, which will make a root (Primary) and swap (extended) - home will be located within the root partition.
Or use the "something else" option and make root (primary) home and swap (both in extended).

8 GB is ok for a base install but you may want to make it a bit larger.
